He was raised in a family that worked hard to make ends meet. His mom had him young, and his grandmother played a big role in helping raise him while his mom worked to build her life. That experience shaped how he sees the world and why he believes people who do everything right should still be able to get ahead.</p><p>For more than 15 years, Rick has worked to help Michigan communities solve problems and get results. From the Michigan House of Representatives to the City of Detroit to Detroit schools, he has seen firsthand where government succeeds and where it falls short. Too many people are being stretched thin by rising housing, grocery, childcare, and utility costs, and government isn't delivering the way it should.</p><p>That’s what pushed him to run. He’s not interested in politics, he’s running because he’s seen how decisions made in Lansing affect real people, and too often those decisions aren’t being made with them in mind.</p><p>Rick and his wife Kimberly live in Corktown with their daughter, Xochitl who was born in June. They also have a dog, Atticus, and a cat, Roman. This moment in his life makes this work even more personal. He’s thinking about the kind of future they’re building for their family and for families across the district.</p><p>As a leader, Rick will be focused on results fighting for working people, being clear about where he stands, and staying accountable to the people he represents.</p>

<p>I’m running for State House because too many of us in Detroit are working hard and still struggling to get ahead. Housing costs, child care, utility bills, and grocery prices keep rising, and we need leaders who will actually fight to lower costs. For the last 15 years, I’ve worked in public service helping solve problems, balance budgets, and deliver results for our communities. Now, I’m running for State House to make government work for the people who need it most.</p>

<p>A job isn’t a real opportunity if you can’t get there.</p><p>I supports building a stronger, more reliable regional transit system, including the Regional Transit Authority of Southeast Michigan, to connect people to jobs, school, and opportunity across Metro Detroit.</p>

<h2>Reliable Public Transit</h2>

<p><strong>Healthcare for All&nbsp;</strong></p><p>Studies have shown that, on average, Michiganders spend approximately 20% of their income on healthcare expenses.&nbsp; As healthcare costs have continued to increase and marketplace insurance premiums rise (nearly 20% this past year), families in Michigan are being forced to make tough choices like not enrolling in health insurance coverage to avoid costly premiums, not attending medical appointments or getting preventative care to avoid high co-pays and deductibles, taking on medical debt to afford necessary and life-saving treatments, or rationing medicine to avoid skyrocketing drug costs.&nbsp;</p><p>Simply put, the current private healthcare market is out of control and it's time the government stepped in to make it right for Michigan families.&nbsp; This is why, as your state representative, I will support the MiCare legislation.&nbsp; This legislation will:</p><p>Ensure every Michigander has affordable comprehensive healthcare coverage, including hospitalization, mental health care, dental care, reproductive health care, and prescription drug coverage.</p><p>Streamline existing federal, state, and private healthcare funding sources to a single payer system that is publicly administered so that overall administrative and overhead costs can be reduced, healthcare prices can be negotiated to lower rates, and out of pocket expenses like co-pays, co-insurance, deductibles, and unexpected medical expenses can be eliminated for Michigan patients.</p><p>Improve the quality of healthcare being provided to Michigan patients by setting and enforcing standards of care based on the most recent and updated available science, for providers within the MiCare provider network.</p><p>Allow providers to maintain their autonomy and patients to maintain their freedom to choose their own doctors within the MiCare provider network.</p><p>In a world-class country like the United States, it’s time we build a world-class health system that Americans are proud of and stop letting it continue to run like the wild, wild west.&nbsp; As you’re your state representative, I’ll help Michigan lead the way.&nbsp;</p>

<p>&nbsp;Healthcare is a right not a privilege. I support the MI Care Act healthcare for all in Michigan and will vote to make it law. It guarantees coverage for everyone and uses the state’s bargaining power to bring down costs, including prescription drugs.</p>

<p>I support the Money Out of Politics ballot initiative because I don’t believe regulated utility companies or large government contractors should be making campaign contributions to the same elected officials responsible for overseeing them. That’s a basic conflict of interest, and it undermines public trust. I support stronger transparency and accountability laws so people can have more confidence that decisions are being made in the public interest not based on political donations.</p>

<h2>Money Out of Politics</h2>

<p>If corporations take public dollars, they should deliver for the public.</p><p>I will require prevailing wages, support skilled trades and union jobs, and prioritize local hiring on publicly funded projects. And when companies don’t deliver, they will be held accountable because our tax dollars should work for us, not just boost profits.</p>

<h2>Public Money, Public Good</h2>

<p><strong>I support a&nbsp; moratorium on large-scale data center development until Michigan establishes a regulatory framework that protects ratepayers, water resources, and local communities. Michigan is home to roughly 20% of the world's surface fresh water. That's not just a Michigan asset; it's a global asset. We should be extremely cautious about approving large-scale developments that require enormous amounts of water and energy until we're confident the long-term benefits outweigh the long-term costs.</strong></p><p><strong>Data center technology is evolving rapidly. Companies are already working on more energy-efficient chips, improved cooling systems, and technologies that reduce water consumption. Given how quickly the industry is changing, I think Michigan should be careful about locking itself into large-scale projects today that could be significantly more efficient in five or ten years.</strong></p><p><strong>My position isn't anti-technology. It's that Michigan should put the protection of the Great Lakes and the interests of residents first. Any project should have to demonstrate that it won't increase utility costs for residents, won't threaten our water resources, and provides meaningful economic benefits to the communities hosting it.</strong></p><p><br></p>

<h2>No Data Centers</h2>

<p>Michigan’s childcare system is in crisis. Childcare costs are unaffordable for most families; there aren’t enough childcare providers to meet the demand; and, childcare workers are not sufficiently compensated for their work, leading to a shrinking workforce. In January 2023, Governor Whitmer and the state legislature took the first step to address the childcare crisis with the rollout of the PreK for All strategy that would provide every four-year-old in Michigan with access to free Prekindergarten by 2027. While progress has been made, the system caring for children zero to three years of age remains in a state of crisis.&nbsp;&nbsp;As your state representative, I will fight to not only finish the job of expanding free Pre-K access to every four-year-old-in Michigan, but will also fight to ensure our children zero to three are not left behind by:</p><p><strong>Continuing to fund free Pre-K for All four-year-olds</strong>, which would include the provision of start-up grants and technical assistance for new providers and new classrooms; increased per-pupil funding for providers that must first be used to increase programming to five-days a week and increase teacher’s pay; a state-backed benefits package for teachers that includes health insurance, paid time off, and dental insurance; tuition support for Pre-K teaching credentialing; professional development support for existing staff; and transportation support for children who need it.</p><p><strong>Increasing funding for Pre-K for All to expand access to every three-year-old in Michigan by 2030.</strong></p><p><strong>Establishing the Zero to Two Childcare Preservation Fund</strong> to help providers maintain and expand infant and toddler childcare slots and pay eligible family members who provide care for children ages 0 to 2.</p><p><br></p>

<p>Childcare costs are out of control, l often costing as much as rent. And, that is if you are even able to find an opening. Quality, affordable childcare isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity for working families in our state</p>

<p>Every family deserves a place to call home.</p><p>I will invest in truly affordable housing, support first-time homebuyers, and push back on corporate speculation driving up prices so families can stay in their communities.</p>

<p>As your state representative,&nbsp;I’ll fight to ensure Michigan’s families’ paychecks keep up with costs by:</p><p><strong>Continuing to Increase the Minimum Wage:</strong>&nbsp;In 2025, Governor Whitmer signed into law Public Act 1, which gradually increases Michigan’s minimum wage from $12.50 an hour to $15 an hour by January 2027. As your representative, I will fight for the next increase in the minimum wage to ensure it keeps up with inflation.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p><p><strong>Creating a State Child Tax Credit that Doesn’t Leave Out Michigan’s Working-and Middle-Class:</strong>&nbsp;Today, 17 states provide their residents with a state child tax credit in addition to the $2,200 federal tax credit.&nbsp; Michigan is not one of them.&nbsp; Many states are doing this because the current structure of the federal tax credit benefits higher income families and prevents families of nearly 1 in 4 children, or 19 million children in the US, from receiving the credit because their family income is not high enough. In Michigan, 582,000 children under the age of 17 are ineligible for the $2,200 federal tax credit because their family incomes are too low. As your representative, I will fight for a state child tax credit that is based on fairness and benefits those left out from the federal tax credit, Michigan’s working and middle-class families.</p><p><strong>Creating a State-wide Paid Family and Medical Leave Program for Michigan’s Workforce:&nbsp;</strong>Michigan’s families should not have to choose between caring for a new child, addressing their own serious illness, caring for a seriously ill family member, or foregoing their entire pay. Yet these are decisions most Michigan workers are forced to make at some point in their lives. As your state representative, I will fight for the development of a state-wide paid family and medical leave program that ensures hardworking Michiganders don’t have to worry about making ends meet while forging through some of the most challenging moments of their lives.</p>

<p>If the cost of living goes up,&nbsp;a new child is welcomed into your home, or you or a family member becomes seriously ill,&nbsp;working families shouldn’t fall behind. I will fight to make sure wages keep up with real costs, and tax credits and financial supports working families need are available to them. We must stop the trend of hardworking Michigan families falling further behind every year.</p>
